The increased coal production worldwide through underground mining led to explosions of gas ( methane and carbon dioxide) and coal from the working mine face. Outburst was not a problem when coal was mined from outcrops and shallow shafting in Great Britain and Europe because gas was easily liberated to the atmosphere.
