The role of the Na + —Ca 2+ exchanger. An enhanced ability of hibernating animals to produce ATP and to maintain Na + and K + gradients by Na + /K + ATPase (for reviews, see Willis, 1979; Lymann et al., 1982; Wang, 1988 ; Willis et al., 1992) is thus an essential part of intracellular Ca 2+ homeostasis.
