Now, silk lines were and are braided with machines (much like a bootlace, not twisted like ropes). The operator can make a loose braid or a tight one, with many thin or fewer thick threads. A loose braid consumes less silk (a cost factor), and the line will be more pliable and have a considerable stretch.
